Recently widowed Bill Hale (Christopher Lloyd) takes in his granddaughter Ryann (Ariel Gade) while her parents travel for a few weeks. During her visit, Ryann finds a dog/wolf that has been injured. Quickly falling in love with the dog, Ryann is convinced that she wants to bring it home to Boston and make it her pet. Bill knows that may not be possible, and tries to teach Ryann about the wild and why this animal will one day need to be returned to the wild. Ryann is unconvinced, and works with a neighbor boy to train the dog to be a sled dog. The dog must win a race for them to be able to keep him, but Ryann will run into some trouble in the form of a local bully trying to take the dog from her. Will Ryann and her new friend find a way to train the dog and therefore be able to keep him?
